TASK FORCE - definition:

A nonprofit task force is a temporary group assembled to address a specific, time-sensitive issue or project, such as reviewing bylaws or developing a new policy, and then typically disbands once its goal is achieved.

Task forces are often created by the board to concentrate expert knowledge on a pressing need and can include board members, staff, and external experts with relevant skills. They are empowered to make decisions and provide recommendations to the appointing authority, delivering a defined outcome like a report or a proposed course of action.

Key Characteristics

  • Temporariness: Task forces are formed for a limited period, existing only to complete their assigned task.
  • Specific Focus: They tackle one particular challenge or opportunity, unlike standing committees that address ongoing concerns.
  • Expertise-Driven: Members are selected for their specific skills, knowledge, or experience related to the task.
  • Decision-Making Power: The group is authorized to make decisions and provide recommendations without needing frequent permission from superiors.
  • Clear Mandate: A task force receives a clear directive or mandate from the board to achieve a defined outcome.
