SHELTER READY - new app

The District Attorney’s Office said Shelter Ready’s development involved gathering input from dozens of county agencies that provide homeless services. Tamera Kohler, CEO of the Regional Task Force on Homelessness, said, “The most common question people ask when experiencing homelessness is, ‘Where can I go for help?’ And there’s nothing more frontline workers want than to help. So, it’s incredibly timely to have an app to help connect people to services they need, including finding a shelter bed.”

"...believes the app could serve as a model for California and the rest of the country, calling it a call to action for any organization genuinely committed to addressing homelessness in the region."

TASK FORCE - definition:

A nonprofit task force is a temporary group assembled to address a specific, time-sensitive issue or project, such as reviewing bylaws or developing a new policy, and then typically disbands once its goal is achieved.

Task forces are often created by the board to concentrate expert knowledge on a pressing need and can include board members, staff, and external experts with relevant skills. They are empowered to make decisions and provide recommendations to the appointing authority, delivering a defined outcome like a report or a proposed course of action.

Key Characteristics

  • Temporariness: Task forces are formed for a limited period, existing only to complete their assigned task.
  • Specific Focus: They tackle one particular challenge or opportunity, unlike standing committees that address ongoing concerns.
  • Expertise-Driven: Members are selected for their specific skills, knowledge, or experience related to the task.
  • Decision-Making Power: The group is authorized to make decisions and provide recommendations without needing frequent permission from superiors.
  • Clear Mandate: A task force receives a clear directive or mandate from the board to achieve a defined outcome.
