Biography

Born on February 7, 1957, in Flint, Michigan, Lige Grant Curry is the eldest of six siblings. His passion for music was ignited at an early age by his parents, whose constant playing of music at home fueled his desire to enter the industry. Though he began his journey as a vocalist, he soon discovered his true calling: the bass guitar.

Raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Lige honed his skills in local bands throughout his school years. After graduating high school in 1975, he dedicated himself to mastering his craft, eventually becoming the bassist and vocalist for The Electric Sparks Band.

The P-Funk Connection

Lige’s career took a pivotal turn following a Parliament-Funkadelic show in Cleveland. At an after-party hosted by The Electric Sparks, Lige and guitarist Mike Hampton performed the iconic classic "Maggot Brain." The performance deeply impressed George Clinton, marking the beginning of a lifelong musical brotherhood.

After a stint as a music major at Central State University, a 21-year-old Lige reunited with his cousin, Michael Hampton (who joined P-Funk in 1974).

"I met all the band and crew and got to know them. It was a great sense of family in those days. I got a job working on the staff and crew quickly. It was great!"

The Evolution of a Legend

In 1979, Lige officially joined the Parliament-Funkadelic fold as a studio backup singer. While waiting for his moment on the strings, he studied under legendary bassists Billy "Bass" Nelson and Cordell "Boogie" Mosson.

The "Lige Curry Adventure" truly began when Rodney "Skeet" Curtis departed and Boogie Mosson moved to guitar. Invited by lead singer Garry Shider to take over the bass mantle, Lige stepped into the spotlight.

"I was honored. I knew it was my chance to dance, so I took it. I will always be thankful for the job!"
